Diego - Degu (Octogon Degus)

A degu name Diego posing for the camera

Meet Diego, Roos2u's first Degu! Pretty cute huh? If you have never heard of a Degu, they are a rodent species that is mainly found in Chile. In fact, they are among the oldest-known rodents in all of South America! The Degu belongs to the Caviomorphan hystricognath family, along with the chinchilla and guinea pig.

Degus are extremely social and friendly, making them very popular as pets. They are not known for nipping or biting and - if handled correctly from a young age - are very affectionate to humans. They will climb onto your shoulders and on occasion groom you once you have established a bond. Another advantage is their cleanliness: Degus love to give themselves sand baths! Their average lifespan in captivity is 6-8 years.

Degus are also highly intelligent. They are well-known for their problem solving skills, which include: being able to stack small items from largest to smallest and using a small rake to recover hard-to-reach seeds. Pretty amazing isn't it?
